About this handbook

This handbook belongs to the Quartz plugin quartz-multilanguage. And it is built with it: the switcher at the top right comes from there.

This box, too, appears twice in the configuration — once per language.

2.1 – The three ways

Language folders

content/de/notizen/kaffee.md → language de, base path notizen/kaffee
content/en/notes/coffee.md → language en, base path notes/coffee

The usual way, and the one with the fewest surprises: the page’s address carries the language visibly, redirects and link rewriting work, and the languages sit apart in the vault.

File suffix

content/guide.md → default language, base path guide
content/guide.de.md → language de, base path guide

Good for sites where only part is translated: the two versions sit side by side, and deleting the German one changes nothing about the English. The price is an address that does not show its language.

Frontmatter

---
title: Mentions légales
lang: fr
---

For individual cases that fit no convention — a French imprint on an otherwise bilingual site.

The way with the most restrictions

A page detected only through the frontmatter has no slug convention: from its path there is no way to derive what its translation would be called. Fallback redirects (chapter 6) and link rewriting (7.2) therefore do not apply to it. The switcher and hreflang do.

Combining is the normal case

All three may sit side by side. A site with language folders can assign a single file to a third language through the frontmatter without creating a folder for it.
