The menu is deliberately small. Almost everything happens in the interface; the menu has four jobs that are hard to place there.
The three shortcuts that matter
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| ⌘S / Ctrl+S | Saves the open page — the same as the save button. |
| ⌘, / Ctrl+, | Opens the settings. |
| ⌘Q / Ctrl+Q | Quits QuartzControl. What happens to a running dev server is in the settings. |
⌘S only acts where there is something to save. On a page without a document it does nothing — and that is precisely why the menu entry is never greyed out.
The menus
File — Save, and on Windows and Linux additionally Settings and Quit. On macOS those two live in the application menu, where they belong.
Edit — Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All. The system’s usual commands, for the text fields in QuartzControl.
View — Reload, Developer tools, Zoom, Full screen. The zoom is the most useful of them: it enlarges the whole interface.
Window — Minimise, Zoom, and on macOS “Bring All to Front”.
Help — five entries:
- Handbook — this one, from the beginning. It lives online and opens in the browser, so it needs a network, and it describes the most recently published version. The same route sits on the start screen beside the two links below it — and anyone looking for a particular page had better use “Read this in the handbook” in the header of the screen they are on: that leads straight to the matching chapter.
- Send feedback — opens a prepared message.
- Quartz documentation — where this handbook stops.
- Plugin catalogue — the organisation on GitHub.
- Open data folder — see Where the data lives.
What the menu cannot do
Anything project-related. You switch projects in the sidebar via All projects, not through a menu — there is no “recently opened” list there, because the start screen is one.
Keyboard operation in the interface
Two places deserve a mention of their own, because they replace a gesture otherwise known only with a mouse:
Dragging and dropping works everywhere with the keyboard: pick up with space or enter, move with the arrow keys, drop with space or enter, cancel with escape. That covers the plugin list, the frame editor and the layout board. Sortable rows additionally carry move up and move down.
Switch bars — the tabs under the header, the choice between light and dark, the preview width — are radio groups: one tab stop leads in, the arrow keys change the selection, wrapping at both ends.
